Art description: A utilitarian identifier, the claim tag linked customer to object within repair systems ranging from vacuum cleaners to lawn mowers. Typically produced with a tear-away stub, one portion remained with the item while the other was retained by the customer as proof of ownership. Numbered and perforated, the tag mediated trust, standing in for the object during its absence. Unlike today’s consumer culture of disposable goods and planned obsolescence, a repaired and returned television symbolized a time of much less excess.
