Art description: The gateway to analog media mass consumption, this laminated card granted access to the many shelves of VHS and Beta tapes housed within local rental stores. Membership formalized participation, linking identity to borrowing privileges and late fees. Scanned or manually recorded, it mediated transactions between customer and clerk, embedding routine into weekend habits. The card signified belonging to a specific place, where selection involved browsing shelves rather than scrolling interfaces. As streaming displaced rental culture, the membership card remains a token of localized entertainment economies and the rituals of selection, checkout, rewind (be kind!), and return.
